About Mission Hills

Mission Hills is an upscale community in San Diego, California that is located on the hills overlooking the downtown area, the bay, and Old Town.

Mission Hills was created in the early 1900s and is one of the city’s oldest communities. It is popular for its well manicured lawns and stately estates. You’ll find a variety of large mansions and charming bungalows in this neighborhood. The Mission Hills Historic District and the Fort Stockton Line Historic District are in this area and recognized by the city.

Washington Street and University Avenue are the main business streets. Other streets include Sunset Boulevard and Stockton Drive. And the cross streets were named after birds starting with Albatross and ending in Lark in alphabetical order. Fort Stockton Drive is one of the thoroughfares that have streetcar rail tracks.

The San Diego Unified School District is the second largest in the state and offers facilities like Point Loma High School and highly ranked Grant Elementary School. This community is the home of Francis Parker School, a private institution that was founded in 1912. William Templeton Johnson and Clara, his wife, ran this school on their progressive ideals. There are also several other private schools in this region. A branch of the San Diego Public Library is located on a corner of Hawk Street and Washington Street.

Although Mission Valley is mostly residential there are some restaurants and shops. Locals enjoy Lefty’s and Brooklyn Girl for dining. And the Lamplighter offers karaoke and drinks. On Fort Stockton Drive you’ll find the Mission Hills Nursery which is one of San Diego’s oldest nurseries.

There are many parks in this area like Presidio Park as well as golfing venues like the Presidio Golf Course. The USCD Medical Center is to the east and freeway access is close by.
